Last night Dad, Sarah, and I attended a 2 hour seminar on "How to Start a Small Business" at the local community college. Since Sarah would like have a business selling her decorated cakes and other baked goods, and I have been hoping to sell some of my arts and crafts, we thought this course would be a beneficial overview, helping us think through the steps to getting started. Dad came along to learn with us and be our support.
Each of the 8 people taking the class was asked to share their business idea. It was interesting to hear all the different ventures everyone had planned, and the instructor used examples from her past small businesses to illustrate some of her points. We discussed some of the pros and cons of entrepreneurship and the need to test the feasibility of your idea by writing out a business plan. She suggested doing a lot of research to find out what the market is like and to observe and talk to your competitors.
Then we went into a lot of legal and financial information that I didn't totally understand (and some of which wouldn't apply to Sarah and me). All in all I guess the evening was an OK time that got us to thinking about what to consider in setting up our home businesses.
