The first Thursday of each month our local library schedules A Little Lunch Music and invites various musicians to play and/or sing for an hour while the audience shares pizza. The themes change from month to month, and some months we don't participate depending on the selections. Today we were glad we did.
Two ladies sang traditional hymns in a packed Activities Room. Sarah and I arrived early enough to get a good back row seat (actually it's closer to the free pizza that way).
Their repertoire consisted of several familiar hymns such as "Throw Out the Life Line," "Wonderful Words of Life," "His Eye is on the Sparrow," "Dwelling in Beulah Land," "Whispering Hope," and "Old Time Religion."
And this hymn ("How Can I Keep From Singing") written in 1860 by Robert Lowery and music by Ira Sankey was not quite as common; we have sung it at church, and I've really liked it. They also included a hymn titled "I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say," otherwise known as the folk song "Star of the County Down." (Click here to hear the music minus the words.)
It was interesting to watch all the old folks from the retirement homes who were there singing along because they knew most of the songs. We probably enjoyed this particular Lunch at the Library more than any they've sponsored in the past.
