Plans are coming together for our trek to the wild wonderful mountains of West Virginia. We're looking forward to our fall break with the family and decided to take John's advice and travel here, hiking and/or biking the Greenbrier River Trail, and touring the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.
After lots of internet searching for a place to stay, looks like we'll for sure have a place to lay our heads even though a lot of the lodgings were already booked with folks getting away to see the fall leaves. We're I'm not the rustic type of camper, so just grabbing a spot in the woods with a tent isn't an option. Plus, with my mom going with us this year, I'm sure she'll like the Bed & Breakfast that was available.
We still have to type out an itinerary to make sure we don't forget anything. I've checked covered bridge locations, and there are two in Greenbrier County here and here for photo ops.
We all enjoyed last fall's trip to the New River Gorge and Pipestem State Park in West Virginia; and the year before Martinsburg, West Virginia, won our attention. And to think that I've lived next door to West Virginia my entire life and never visited the state until 3 years ago when we moved out to the Valley. But still, I'm not sure I would agree with their license plate slogan.
Almost heaven? Now, that's Virginia!

Wait a minute......before you go making anymore down remarks about WV not being almost Heaven, remember you have people from all over reading this here blog. My Ma and Pa was born and reared in them WV hills!! :)
Haven't ya'll been to Cass before? It seems like I remember Hannah telling me something about it. My family and I were at Cass about 11 years ago for a reunion in that area. We have pictures standing outside of the train.

Hi Courtney, I always enjoy getting your comments; you are hilarious! :)
Yes, Mr. G, Hannah, and I went to Cass last fall for a day trip. Since we liked it so much, we thought J & S would like to ride the train; plus, we're doing more stuff in that area, too.

Well, I hope your trip is enjoyable. Last year was peak color at Cass around Oct. 20. I think it may be sooner this year.
It's worth checking on train tickets as soon as you get there, because we had trouble getting tickets on our first day. We bought for the first trip of the next day, and that was a relief. Turned out our train was not very full. Beautiful scenery + no huge crowds = good time.
If you do the Greenbriar trail, realize that it's almost flat. Nice for walking, but if you're pedaling, you never get to coast. It's gravel, but not too rough.
As I mentioned on my blog, we rode from Clover Lick south to Sharps Tunnel and the Greenbriar River Bridge. Definitely a cool trip, but you have to invest serious mileage to do it. Six miles "downhill" to get there and six back. Check out the Trail map with mileage info.
Look forward to pictures of all the various activities!
We hope to go camping somewhere again this year. We might go back, or we might try somewhere else. It may depend on our vehicle situation.

John, thanks for the heads up on tickets and the tip on the trail.
Hopefully, we'll get some good photos. Hope y'all have a nice trip, too, wherever you end up later this month.
Courtney, thanks! We're praying for some great fall weather that weekend we travel.
