Homework! That's what I've been doing this week in preparation for my sewing class tomorrow. Our assignment was to cut the borders using a mat, ruler, and rotary cutter. I've used these sewing items once before, but evidently I didn't remember all I should have. My teacher watched me struggle with exactly how to measure and then asked, "Have you used a rotary cutter before?" This was after she saw me running it across the mat with the blade closed and wondering why the fabric wasn't cut! Oops...
Yesterday Hannah reviewed some how-tos with me, and I was able to get the hang of it again. I completed the smaller purple border around the landscape scene; then I added the wider green floral border around that. In the picture to the right I have my finished assignment for tomorrow on top of the fabric I will use for the backing.
Remember the old saying, "Measure twice; cut once?" I did exactly that! I did! However...I failed to check the measuring instructions twice. My eyes read the measurement as 25 inches; however, after sewing one border that ended up too short, I re-checked and it should have been 25 1/2 inches. That inaccuracy plus another cutting error (oops) called for major correction. Sarah volunteered to rip out that seam while I re-cut another border--thankfully with enough fabric left over for that very purpose.
Tomorrow's class will include assembling all layers together and quilting the appliqued pieces. It will be our first time to use the shop's sewing machines--so far, we've basically cut and pasted. And those little black sheep heads and legs out there in that field were soooo tiny! I had to use sewing tweezers to hold onto them. It's a good thing the other ladies in class have been sewing since they were 10 years old; this means the teacher has plenty of time helping me!
I've had fun re-learning and practicing sewing skills in this class, and I'll post the wall hanging when it's all done. Then I just might start another one of these Pine Needles patterns--while I still remember how!

It's looking great, Deb! I do the same things, like not reading the instructions correctly, and end up having to do some over. Today I was crocheting a dishcloth and had to start it over twice!
