My guess is that he is recording the sounds of the great outdoors (birds, wind, etc.) to incorporate into his music.

I know. I know, pick me!! :) You are recording sounds for an audio story. Kinda like the radio shows that have all the sound effects?

Chris just looked at the pictures and here is his answer,,,,,, recording sounds through the ground-like a geologist would do.
