After a visit to a few interesting yard sales (someone has birdhouses for sale!), I am headed downtown to the Wharf area of our fair city later this morning for Knit in Public Day. I've never participated, but it should be fun! We'll be knitting outside of Byer's Street Housewares and Blue Mountain Coffees (in the shade!). Thankfully, I have something I'm working on so I can practice knitting with other members of our community.
While my sister was here last week, she "got me going yet again" on my knitting after we visited a couple of neat yarn shops. She even searched the internet to find an appropriate pattern for beginners so I could practice getting my tension just right. Maggie's Rags is one site with some free patterns, and she picked Chinese Waves Dishcloth, which I started while she was here. We picked a simple red Sugar and Cream yarn so it would be easy to see the distinct pattern of the four different rows of stitches.
She also bought some nifty bamboo needles which she left here for me since those are what I started using. How sweet is that! I am trying hard not to put this project down but continue knitting so I won't forget all the tips she taught me! Why can't I seem to stick with it?!
I also started knitting a scarf using the recently purchased colorful purple yarn. This is what I'll take to Knit in Public Day since it's plain knitting, and I won't have to think of keeping a pattern straight with so much activity going on around us as we'll be right near the Saturday morning Farmers' Market.
If you're a knitter, will you be knitting in public today? If you will be knitting, leave a comment about your experiences. If not, what will you be doing in your neck of the woods? Whatever it is, have a fun weekend!
~Deb

Knitting in Public-how neat!!Not that I can knit!!Actually knitting has made such a comeback that on a TV show The Gilmore Girls(not a good show-no endorsement) they had a Knit a Thon to help raise money for the town. The lady from the restaurant
actually went so far as to make the spahetti up to look like skeins of yarn and put the breadsticks in as knitting needles.

Deb, I have never heard of this day ~ what a fun idea! I think that is so wonderful that your sweet sister is encouraging you to start knitting again. Make sure you have plenty of water to drink ~ I know how hot it is in Virginia right now. In our area it was 100! WHEW! Happy knitting;o)

Never heard of a Knit in Public Day. I may start knitting again if I can't find a nice black sweater. I bought my daughter a basic knitting machine (from Pennysaver ad) and she knit quite a bit in a short time and the stitches were perfect! I see the machines are cheap on ebay, so I recommend that for fun and getting the job done. Sure did enjoy your hubby's posts. Thanks ~ Kathie
