Last week we gathered again with the ladies and girls from our church, this time to learn the skill of calligraphy. I began studying calligraphy when I was 12, and since then I have practiced on my own and been helped by my aunt who is also a calligrapher. I was especially glad to have her has a co-teacher while she was here visiting with us!
The Italic style of lettering, also called Chancery Cursive, is the alphabet I am most familiar with and the one we taught everyone as an introduction to the art of calligraphy.
The saying in the frame above is one which Mom saw in a country catalog once and has asked me to calligraph as gifts for people over the years. It was one of several finished projects I showed as examples of various fonts and calligraphy designs. I had the dry-erase board up to demonstrate different aspects of the letters. We warmed up by practicing our pen strokes and continued through the alphabet, focusing on key letters.
Mothers and daughters both enjoyed developing their calligraphy-writing abilities. Using calligraphy is one way of beautifying our homes creatively, such as writing Scripture to display on the walls of your house. Some of the girls planned to immediately use the things they had learned to make cards of thanks and encouragement to send. I hope they continue to work on this talent!

I enjoyed helping out, Hannah! It has made me want to get back to doing some calligraphy again myself. :-)

How fun, Hannah! Your Aunt Bet and I learned together to write in calligraphy when we took the BJU class together so many years ago. I always thought she was better at it than I. Your class sounds great, and your sample is beautiful! :)
