Over the weekend we decided to get away for a few hours to do some leaf peeping; so we drove up to Wintergreen Ski Resort, about an hour from us here in the Valley.
Some of the leaves had turned, especially in the higher elevations, but the majority around the Afton Mountain area have quite a ways to go for pretty fall color.
We had hoped the ski lift would be operating so we could take a chilly chair ride down the mountain, but we were a couple of weekends too early.
Maybe we'll head back to snowy Wintergreen next season for some skiing...and for some hot chocolate drinking and knitting in the lodge for non-skiers like me!

Yeah, the chocolate drinking and knitting by the fire sound a lot better to me than flying down a snowy hill with a couple of boards strapped to my feet.

I remember driving through your area many years ago when the colors were at their fall peak. It was breath taking. Enjoy.

"leaf peeping" - a new phrase to me - I guess I'm one, despite being a local :)
You'll have to go back up in a few weeks when the ski lift is running. The photo ops would be stunning.

It was pretty chilly there on Monday. Bill and I went to Sharp Shopper, in Waynesboro, and then visited briefly with Rebekah in Charlottesville. We had thought we would picnic on Afton Mountain, but it was cool enough we went on to Waynesboro. We were dressed for Williamsburg comfort range and had no idea it would be at least 10 degrees cooler. We were surprised that some leaves were almost past peak, while most were still green.

Ah, I was there Saturday. That is where we had my folks 50th anniversary party. My sister rented a house for the weekend up there! Wasn't it a gorgeous weekend?
