If the only way you could witness to someone was by singing a song, which song would you pick?
That's the question Jonathan posed to everyone at the supper table on Friday evening. We were gathered round having our family devotions before celebrating Jonathan's 26th birthday later that evening.
Granny immediately answered Jonathan's question with Amazing Grace as her song choice.
Jonathan said he'd pick And Can It Be That I Should Gain (click on Midi link for tune). And since it was his birthday after all...that's the song we selected. After pondering the words, I think it's a good choice for someone to hear of God's amazing love, don't you?
And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain—
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
’Tis mystery all: th’Immortal dies:
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
To sound the depths of love divine.
’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more.
’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore;
Let angel minds inquire no more.
He left His Father’s throne above
So free, so infinite His grace—
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For O my God, it found out me!
’Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For O my God, it found out me!
Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray—
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th’eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Bold I approach th’eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

That's one of my favorites, too. If I had to pick something different, it may be Be Thou My Vision.
By the way, I didn't realize how big those mountains of yours are until I drove through them.
Do you live in the gentle rolling hills or the mountains that made my ears pop? :)

That cake looks amazing!
I'd choose Grace Greater Than All Our Sin. Love that song!
Happy Birthday to Jonathan!

"And Can it Be" has long been one of my favorite hymns, and I'm so glad you included all 5 verses here -- but my answer to your question would be . . . "Not What My Hands Have Done," by Horatius Bonar.

I would pick "In The Garden". As a matter of fact, I have the hymn framed, hanging on the wall in our bedroom. I hope you had a very blessed birthday, Jonathan!

What good hymns everyone is suggesting. Wish you'd all come over for a hymnsing! My favorite to play and sing is How Great Thou Art...but my favorite words are Tis So Sweet...especially the fourth verse.
