Thank you all for the nice comments on Part 1 of the Barn Quilt Tour Hannah and I took last Saturday. I wish you all could have been with us! Today I'll show you some of the barn quilts we saw on the Seldom Seen tour and also a portion of the 30+ barn quilts we found on the Highland County self-guided barn tour.
Hannah was my navigator while I drove the country roads, made U-turns on the mostly deserted two-lane roads if we missed a quilt to go back and see it, and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful countryside.
At some stops we shot photos from our car windows, and at others we got out and talked awhile to the property owners. Here's Hannah deep in thought comparing the best routes so we wouldn't miss a single barn:Using both the barn quilt map for the county and the Seldom Seen tour guide which featured eight barn quilts, we made our way via the northern route which would eventually make a big loop around the county.
We ended up venturing off the route several times, and at one point we found ourselves crossing over into West Virginia! Uh...where are we? It was all good though....a wonderful Bear Paw barn quilt wasn't far away:And here it is below. This particular barn quilt was a relief to see...mainly because it meant we weren't lost after all! We were on the right road! One of the most unique Seldom Seen barn quilts belonged to this nice lady who was from Crozet; this was her getaway home with a beautiful view of the mountains. How about those foxes? Love them! This lady below opened her property for the tour participants. She likes chickens! And she lives in this log cabin:
Come follow along the Quilt Trail with me. We drove over cattle guards and waited for cows to cross the road: We saw pastures of sheep: We climbed hills and saw this amazingly beautiful view at the top: Below: here's an up-close photo of the Seldom Seen quilt at this particular location. It's hanging on the barn you see by the pond above: I mentioned in the last post that I would show you the local barn quilt painter's studio, Highland Barn Quilts. Margie’s works are colorful decorations for barns, houses, and outbuildings. Her studio is located in Hightown, Virginia.
Here's the outside of her studio where Margie has painted a welcoming contemporary Maple Leaf pattern barn quilt: And here's her current barn quilt project being worked on inside: I'm in her studio below perusing her notebook of quilts pictured all over Highland County. She's evidently a busy lady, and they were all beautiful: On the road again.....we came across this unique Bee quilt pattern hanging on a shelter for bee hives and surrounded by an electric fence. Hannah braved the field and got our picture. We thought this would definitely be of interest to Jonathan, our bee-keeper wanna-be: Jacob's Ladder quilt block: This one is called Moon and Star Over the Mountain:
Doesn't that quilt dress up that old barn below? It's called Basket of Pomegranates, on point.Hannah and I found all eight of the Seldom Seen quilts which included Celtic Knot, North Star, Autumn Splendor, Dutchman's Puzzle, Foxes, Under Blue Mountain Skies, Carolyn's Hen & Hummingbird, and Log Cabin Doors. It was so fun!
At the end of the afternoon before we left for home, we stopped by a little garden shop in downtown Monterey...Morning Glories and Moonflowers. Hannah wanted to inquire if they might be interested in carrying some of her garden soaps. We'll see what happens:I hope you've enjoyed coming along with us on our trek in the country. We enjoyed our day together sooo much!
~Deb

Who knew there are so many barn quilts out there. Just driving around the beautiful Virginia countryside would have been enough for me. Add in those amazing barn quilts and it's like icing on the cake. Glad you had such a fun day.

Hi Deb, Thank you for sharing the tour. I think you might stay on the road about as much as I do. I've learned something new with the Barn Quilts and will have to be on the watch for them when I get back up your way. I trust all the family is doing well. Be Blessed!!! -Steve
